The Cruzan Rum Distillery in Frederiksted on St. Croix provides a genuine slice of old Danish colonial life, with continuing operations going back 250 years. The company was originally owned by the Danish Nelthropp family and is still run by them today. Today, tours of the distillery are offered to the general public and there’s a good chance you may run into one of the modern-day Nelthropps! If you decide to take one of these tours, you’ll get a good picture of the history of St. Croix as well as learn a thing or two about how rum is made! At the end of the tour, you’ll also get to sample a few different rums.
Cruzan Rum is named for the people of St. Croix, often called Crucians. You’ll enjoy walking through the open-air distillery with a light tropical breeze blowing through and the pungent smell of molasses permeating the area. Whether you enjoy rum or not, you’ll want to learn about the role it played in the development of the Danish colony. Tours are offered six days a week and cost a nominal fee of $8 per head. In addition, you can buy duty-free rum at the distillery’s gift shop.
